Makes Your Computer Faster

Browsing the internet your computer picks up a whole host of unnecessary files, cookies and history. The same thing happens when you run most programs on your computer – lots of temporary files and settings are saved. CCleaner removes these unused files and settings to free up valuable hard drive space, enabling your system to run faster. The default settings only focus on typical junk files and locations so you’re unlikely to lose important information unless you alter these. A Startup Cleaner also helps you to identify and remove unused programs running in the background when you start your computer. This makes the startup time shorter and puts less strain on your hard drive throughout use. You can read more about startup support here.

Secure Web Browsing

Advertisers and websites track your behaviour online with cookies. Saved passwords, cached data and internet histories make your identity less secure. CCleaner removes these files to make your browsing experience confidential, meaning you are less likely to suffer from identity theft and/or online fraud. The military grade Drive Wiper ensures any data you want to be permanently deleted, stays deleted.

Fixes System Errors and Reduces Crashes

If you notice lots of system freezes, error messages and often experience crashes, the chances are your registry become cluttered with unused files and broken settings. CCleaner’s fully featured Registry Cleaner identifies these issues and fixes them. The registry analysis takes seconds and cleaning just a little bit longer. Prompts advise you when to save backups to avoid losing important data.

Cleaning

CCleaner Tools and Options tabs allow you to customise cleaning options to fit your needs. If you are not a savvy user, you might want to stick with the safe default settings. Advanced users can uninstall unwanted programs, select which cookies to save, customise cleaning settings and setup system monitoring.

Conclusion

CCleaner has earned its position at the top of the freeware cleaners offering the sort of features premium programs struggle to compete with. The clean, intuitive UI makes it one of the easiest programs to use, but don’t let its size and simplicity fool you. This is a powerful utility for improving your computers performance. Piriform’s regular update process means CCleaner is constantly improving and its popularity will continue to grow.

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 2.1.0.12

A must-have for anyone using Firefox on more than one computer, this free extension grants you access to your entire collection of bookmarks from any computer also equipped with Firefox and Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer. A simple, effective start-up wizard guides you through setting up a Foxmarks logon, after which the program indexes your bookmarks. After installing Foxmarks on the second computer, we were given a choice to merge or junk bookmarks from either rig. We were pleased that Foxmarks prompted us to synchronize when it detected newly-added bookmarks, though this really should happen automatically.

A Foxmarks menu under the Tools tab in Firefox erases our previous complaints about blocked access the settings. The Help file is still absent from this menu, but a shortcut link to the Foxmarks Web site makes getting to the support section more direct. Also appreciated is the Web record of your indexed bookmarks, where you can add and manage bookmarks.

Opera 9.5

Opera 9.50 maintains the program's tradition of striving for the fastest, smallest, and most full-featured browser available. Opera covers the basics with tabbed browsing, mouse-over previews, a customizable search bar, advanced bookmarking tools, and simple integration with e-mail and chat clients. Mouse-gesture support, keyboard shortcuts, and drag-and-drop functionality round out the essentials.

Opera's extras push it to the top of the class. Integrated theme support previews themes from within the interface, and the new version sports a default redo that's an attractive balance between "dark" and "light" themes. Opera's desktop widgets can appear anywhere while Opera is running. The Wand utility combines autofill with saved passwords, and it's hard to ignore the addition of torrent support and real-time fraud protection. The latest version includes reasonable anti-malware protection courtesy Haute Secure.

The expanded features in 9.50 should make any non-believer do a double-take. Opera Link enables Bookmarks, the Personal bar, Speed Dial, and Notes synchronization across all other Opera instances. Quick Find improves the search tool, allowing for full text searching from the address field, the history panel, and opera:historysearch. The Status bar has been restored as a default, the Wand now lets users confirm a successful login before saving credentials, and spatial navigation--similar to Opera Mini and the Wii browser--has been introduced.

The new version is faster, has multiple back-end changes to handle code better, and overall we think Opera has what it takes to unseat even the biggest-name browsers. You just need to hear it sing.

Quick Startup

This simple utility is basically a gussied-up version of the Startup tab in Windows' MSConfig utility. Like its Windows counterpart, Quick Startup lets you control which programs launch on Windows start-up. The straightforward interface displays a list of programs that run when you fire up your PC. By clicking the check box next to each item, you can quickly enable or disable any process from launching. That's about all this little tool can do. Quick Startup links to the Windows Scheduled Tasks and Local Services tools, but it can't control them directly. It can't even advise you whether to delete or keep a start-up entry. Extreme technophobes might get some use out of Quick Startup (it is free), but most people in the know will do just as well with MSConfig.

iTunesControl 0.40

Freeware iTunes plug-in iTunesControl gives us all a chance to improve iTunes' features, if not its sluggishness on Windows machines, by adding long-missing features.

The On-Screen Display pop-up can be customized to an amazing extent. Users can choose to have album art displayed, and can choose precisely which information about the currently playing track gets shown. But you can also choose the screen position, the size of the album art, the background color, the font, the font color, the border thickness and color, and more about the aesthetics of the OSD box. Under the Layout tab, you can cut and paste tags to change the display. Note that opting for the Outline mode will override any background color or border you've previously chosen.

You can set up to 30 different hot keys, from the basics to advanced features like track ratings, repeat mode, hide and show iTunes, and more. Users can also set the title information displayed for iTunes itself and startup and shutdown behavior for iTunes and the plug-in. Two useful options tie the plug-ins behavior to iTunes, so that when you start and close the plug-in, iTunes will also open and shut down.

The program is still in beta, but it's compatible with versions of iTunes as old as 4.6. This is a pretty neat plug-in for those of you who find yourselves addicted to iTunes
